Ingredients for this Cherry Fluff Salad Recipe:
Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe.
- Cherry Pie Filling – you’ll want to use one can of your favorite cherry pie filling.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk – this adds sweetness and delicious flavor to this salad.
- Whipped Topping – use your favorite brand of whipped topping, such as Cool Whip, or you can even make your own homemade whipped cream. You’ll need 1 small tub for this recipe.
- Crushed Pineapple – use one can of crushed pineapple. Drain off the excess liquid and save it to use in other recipes. See the FAQ section below for some ideas on what to do with the pineapple juice.
- Shredded Coconut – you can use sweetened shredded coconut in this recipe. I like to use unsweetened shredded coconut in this recipe. I find Bob’s Red Mill Unsweetened Shredded Coconut (Amazon link) in my local grocery store but you can this this brand and others online.
- Mini Marshmallows – I use regular mini marshmallows for this recipe. But you can swap them out for other flavors (see the FAQ section below).

How to serve Cherry Fluff:
During the summer months, don’t leave this dessert sitting out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Try this tip to extend the amount of time this no bake dessert recipe can sit out at room temperature. Take a large mixing bowl, one that is larger than your serving bowl, and fill it will ice cubes or crushed ice. Place the serving bowl on the ice. This will help extend the time that this dish can sit out at your party or gathering.
Cherry fluff is a delicious dessert that we serve as it is. We like to top a dish of this cherry dessert with maraschino cherries and even an extra sprinkle of marshmallows or coconut.
This also makes a fruity side dish that goes well with angel food cake, pound cake and even cookies.
You can also top this with fresh fruit such as fresh cherries, grapes and strawberries. Or try adding over pineapple chunks or fruit cocktail.
How to store Cherry Fluff:
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Recipe Swaps
Try some of these recipe swaps:
- Swap out the canned cherry pie filling for another type of pie filling such as strawberry pie filling or blueberry pie filling
- Try replacing a cup of whipped topping for sour cream (add tang) or cottage cheese (adds a thicker texture to the fluff)
- Try adding in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts
- Use colored or flavored mini marshmallows in place of the regular flavored mini marshmallows
Can you freeze Cherry Fluff?
No you can’t freeze this cherry fluff dessert salad.
When this dessert thaws you will find that the mixtures separates and becomes watery. Freezing also changes the texture of the fruit as well as the marshmallows.
Don’t bother freezing this recipe. It’s so easy to make that you’ll want to make it fresh to have the best taste and texture.
Can you make Cherry Fluff in advance?
The pink color of this vintage dessert makes it a favorite to serve on Valentine’s day, Mother’s day, at a baby shower or at just about any special occasion. Cherry Fluff tastes better when you serve it the same day that it’s made. The salad remains creamy and the marshmallows have a nice texture. However it can be made a day or two ahead of time if you are making it for a party or special occasion.
As the dessert sits the marshmallows will begin to absorb the liquid from the crushed pineapple and will begin to soften. If you make this recipe a day or two ahead of time you’ll want to stir it a bit before serving. This will mix in any moisture that might have formed on top of the dessert.
Other uses for pineapple juice:
Leftover pineapple juice is great for drinking, mixing in with other fruit juices or using it to make smoothies.
Use it to make popsicles.
Use it in a marinade, such as this Lemon Herb Chicken, to soften up tough cuts of meat.
Add it to your favorite Asian inspired dishes .
