What is the Keto Diet?

A keto diet is a low carb diet in which the dieter is in ketosis. This is achieved by eating a very low carb diet, high fat and moderate protein. However, during the weight loss phase, you would be eating moderate amounts of fat to encourage using body fat as a source of fuel which would lead to weight loss.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic process that starts when the body does not have enough carbohydrates to use for glucose production. Glucose is used by every cell in your body as a fuel source. When there are not enough carbohydrates to produce this fuel the body will switch to an alternative method to obtain fuel. It will use fat to produce ketones to be used as a fuel source.

How can you tell you are in ketosis?

You can test your urine using test strips to see if there are ketones present. Or you can monitor for some of the signs that will indicate you are in ketosis. These include rapid weight loss, keto breath, tiredness/keto flu, increased urination and more. Check out this page for more detailed information on how to tell you are in ketosis even if you don’t have test strips.

What is a carbohydrate?

How can I tell if a food I’m eating contains carbs?

If the food item contains a single ingredient (think olive oil, eggs, chicken, beef, rice, spinach, raspberries) then it’s much easier to figure out if it contains carbohydrates. If the item isn’t a fat (olive oil, canola oil, butter, etc) and isn’t a protein (chicken, fish, beef, pork, lamb, eggs, etc) then there’s a good chance it has carbohydrates.

Foods that are a combination of ingredients, such as many of those bought in the store, often have a mixture of all three. There is an easy way to determine who many carbohydrates an item contains and that is by reading the nutritional label. Check out this page to learn more about reading food nutritional labels to help you determine how many carbohydrates a food contains.
