Unstuffed Egg Roll In A Bowl

While I love egg rolls I don’t like all the extra work that goes into trying to make them. Not to mention all the extra calories that come from frying them. Sorry but baked eggs rolls just aren’t as crispy as a traditional deep fried classic egg roll that you get at your local restaurants.

After seeing recipes for unstuffed egg rolls pop up on the internet I decided to take a recipe for typical egg rolls that I’ve used in the past and just served it up in a bowl. The whole family loved it! Give this easy recipe a try. I’m sure you will love it too!

This can be easily whipped up in a single skillet in about 15 minutes. Not only do you get to have your eggrolls and eat them too! But, you can do it quickly. Perfect for those nights when you are short on time and want to get dinner on the table quickly.

Ingredients for unstuffed egg rolls in a bowl:

Ground pork – restaurant egg rolls typically contain pork but you can easily swap this for other ground meat. See the FAQ section for suggestions.

Bag of coleslaw mix – pre shredded coleslaw mix can be found in the bagged salad section of most local grocery stores. You can use the traditional mix (green cabbage with shredded cabbage) or go for the tri color mix (green cabbage, `matchstick carrots and red cabbage). Both taste delicious in this recipe. You can also substitute a small head of cabbage in place of the shredded coleslaw mix if desired.

Soy sauce – I often use low sodium soy sauce. You can use regular soy sauce or even coconut aminos or tamari sauce.

Fish sauce – look for this in the same section where you find your soy sauce in your local grocery store. It adds a savory flavor to the dish and doesn’t taste fishy at all.

Toasted sesame oil – don’t skip this ingredient or use plain sesame oil. Toasted sesame oil has an incredible flavor, nutty that you only get from the sesame seeds being toasted before they press them. It adds a flavor that you often find in Asian dishes and you won’t want to leave this out.

Spices – garlic powder and ground ginger. You can substitute fresh garlic or fresh ginger in place of the powdered spices.

Green onions – top your finished egg roll in a bowl with some green onions for a burst of flavor

Sesame seeds – we like to sprinkle a bit on top of each bowl. While the toasted sesame oil adds the flavor the whole sesame seeds adds to the look of the dish.

Talk about a super easy list of ingredients!

The prep time is quick. No need to chop or dice anything if you use a bag of pre-shredded coleslaw mix found in most grocery stores. All of my local stores carry Fresh Express bagged coleslaw mixes. I love using the tri color mix as the red cabbage adds a nice touch of color to the dish.
