This keto twisted bacon recipe is about to become your new breakfast best friend. If you think bacon is delicious then I’m about to show you how to make bacon even more delicious. I know it’s hard to believe it’s possible but it’s true.
Twisted bacon is exactly what it sounds like. Bacon that has been twisted and then cooked.
I gave up on frying my bacon in a pan a long time ago and started cooking my bacon in the oven. It’s easy to do, cuts down on the mess to clean and I can cook all my bacon at one time. No more frying half a package at a time in a pan.
A while ago the local news stationed had a story about twisted bacon. I thought….what? Twisted bacon? The news story claimed it made bacon taste even better so I figured it was worth a try. What could go wrong? In the end you still have delicious bacon.
Keto Twisted Bacon Recipe
Twisted bacon takes a few extra minutes of work. Before you cook it the bacon is twisted and then baked. This is supposed to make the bacon taste more delicious. The bacon comes out crispy on the outside and a bit chewy on the inside. Delicious.
But the news story was wrong. I’ve got something even more delicious than twisted bacon!
How about candied twisted bacon?
Typically candied bacon is coated in brown sugar. But that’s not very low carb.
I decided that I would just have to suffer through attempting to turn this recipe keto. It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it! After testing out a variety of low carb/no carb sweeteners I’ve come up with this keto twisted bacon recipe that I know you will love!
Ingredients for Keto Twisted Bacon:
- No Calorie Sweetener – you want to use a granular sweetener such as Lankanto Golden Monkfruit, Swerve or Splenda Sweetener.
- Cajun Seasoning mix – use a store bought seasoning mix or make your own.
- Bacon – you can use your favorite brand. I would suggest not using a thick cut bacon. It’s more difficult to twist and tends to untwist itself while baking.
How to make Keto Twisted Bacon:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place a baking rack on your baking sheet. This will help to keep the bacon out of the melted bacon fat and allow the pieces to become extra crispy.
I like to cover my baking sheet with a bit of foil. This helps to make the clean up a bit easier.
For this recipe, to keep it lower in carbs, you will need to use a lower in carb/no calorie sweetener such as Splenda brown sugar , Lankanto Golden Monkfruit or Swerve Brown Sugar blend. I’ve tried all three.
If you find the erythritol sweeteners, like Swerve and Monkfruit, have too much of a cooling effect then use Splenda Brown sugar. Splenda brown sugar is higher in carbs than the other two sweeteners as it does contain some traditional brown sugar in it.
Monkfruit and Swerve are made with sugar alcohols which the body does not process like traditional sugar making these no carb. The choice of which type of sugar replacement to use is up to you. It will work with all three.
In a mixing bowl blend together your choice of sweetener and the Cajun seasoning mix.
Place the mixed bacon topping ingredients on a large plate or a dish that is wide enough to allow you to place a strip of bacon in it without it being bunched up.
Take a slice of bacon, hold one end in each hand, and begin to twist the bacon. Place the rolled piece of bacon in the brown sugar mixture and turn to coat it.
Place your rolled bacon on the baking rack making sure to keep them rolled up. If you find that the ends of the bacon begin to unroll place a toothpick through the ends to hold them in place.
Be sure to space the bacon on the baking rack so the pieces aren’t touching. As they cook the brown sugar mixture will caramelize and the pieces will stick together if they are touching.
Bake for 25 minutes. Check the color of your bacon. Everyone likes bacon cooked to a different level of doneness and every oven cooks a be differently. This is the type of recipe that you want to check after the initial cooking time as you may need to cook it a bit longer.
The finished bacon should look browned and crispy. If your bacon needs to cook for a bit longer leave it for another 5 minutes. Check the bacon every 5 minutes until it is looking browned and crispy. You don’t want to over cook it as the brown sugar mixture can begin to burn.
Keto Twisted Bacon Recipe Tip:
You will find regular cut or thick cut bacon at the grocery store. After making several attempts with thick cut bacon I found that the ends begin to unroll while they are cooking due to how thick they are. In order to keep that from happening I secured the ends with a toothpick (see the picture above). This kept them from unrolling at the ends and allowed the bacon to become evenly crisp. The regular cut bacon was much easier to roll up and kept its rolled shape.
Serve your keto twisted bacon up with your favorite low carb waffles or pancakes and sugar free pancake syrup for a low carb breakfast that your whole family will love!
How to store leftover Keto Twisted Bacon:
Should you have left over twisted bacon, which I’ve never seen in my house, you can store the leftovers in a storage bag or sealed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
How to reheat Keto Twisted Bacon:
The bacon may not be crispy once it’s stored in the refrigerator. You can reheat the leftovers in the oven (350 F for 3 to 4 minutes) or in the air fryer (350 F for 2-3 minutes).
How to use leftover Keto Twisted Bacon:
Left over bacon? What’s that? If you actually do have leftover twisted bacon here’s a few suggestions to use it if you don’t want to just eat it as it is:
- Try dicing it up and using it as a delicious topping on your favorite salad.
- Mix some into an egg salad recipe.
- Make a low carb BLT by using a lettuce leaf to wrap up your strip of twisted bacon and a slice of fresh tomato.
