Easy Hormel Chili Cheese Dip Recipe

This recipe uses a can of chili. I keep a couple of cans of Hormel chili for various recipes including this dip. But this dip tastes great with lots of other types of chili (canned and homemade)! Try this out with your favorite type of chili including spicy chili, vegetarian chili, no bean chili and even homemade chili like this Beef and Chorizo Chili, easy Pumpkin Chili and even this No Bean Turkey Chili.

Check out the FAQ section below for more swaps and substitutions. You can easily dress this dip up with extra toppings or keep it basic with just the three ingredients shown below.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this dip.

  • Can of Hormel Chili – you can use just about any variety of canned chili. I like using the no bean Hormel Chili (15 ounces) for this recipe. But use your favorite brand or even your own homemade chili.

If you are swapping out the canned chili for your own homemade chili you’ll want to use about 1 1/2 cups to 2 cups of homemade chili in place of a can. The amount varies based on your own personal taste. The cheese can handle having a good amount of chili mixed into it. If I’m using a really chunky homemade chili (lots of pieces of vegetables and beans) then I go with adding more. If the chili is less chunky and has more liquid then I use 1 1/2 cups.

  • Canned Green Chiles – use a 6 to 7 ounce can of green chiles. If I can find fire roasted whole or diced green chiles I grab those. The fire roasting gives it extra flavor. If you don’t find diced chiles in your local store then simple get the whole chiles and chop them up.
  • Velveeta Cheese – you’ll need a 16 ounce block of Velveeta cheese for this recipe.

How to make this Chili Cheese Dip:

canned chili, green chiles and velveta cheese in a skillet

This recipe doesn’t get much easier to make. Prep the Velveeta by cutting it into smaller pieces. It will melt faster that way.

Step 1: In a large skillet or a medium sauce pan add all of the ingredients – can of chili, diced green chiles and Velveeta cheese.

Step 2: Heat the ingredients over a medium heat, stirring as the cheese begins to melt. Continue to stir until all the cheese has melted and the other ingredients are mixed in.

How do you keep Velveeta Cheese Dip from getting hard?

If you’ve ever made any type of dip using Velveeta cheese you know that once it begins to cool down it will firm up again. The only way to keep that from happening is to keep your dip warm.

You can use a slow cooker, if making a large party sized batch of dip, or a smaller sized version of a slow cooker made for keeping dips, sauces and keeping warm. These smaller slow cookers are usually 1.5 quarts in size and is perfectly sized to hold this recipe.

Look for a mini crock pot in your local stores or find it online at Amazon (Amazon link ).

I’ve also used a cast iron skillet to make this dip. The skillet will hold heat for a while which helps to keep the melty cheese from getting firm.

Can you add other ingredients to this chili cheese dip?

This dip recipe makes a good basic dip and you can add in lots of other ingredients to change up the flavor.

In place of the chili you can use a can of chili beans. These are red beans in a chili sauce and they taste great in this dip.

Sprinkle some of these items over the top of the dip before serving: chopped green onion, sliced olives, sliced jalapenos, chopped fresh tomato, salsa and even shredded cheese (give pepper jack cheese, Mexican blend cheese, colby jack, Monterey jack or sharp cheddar cheese a try).

Can Chili Cheese Dip be made in a crock pot?

Yes this dip can easily be made in a crock pot. It’s a perfect way to make it for a large party or family gathering.

Spray the inside crock with non stick spray or, to make clean up even easier, use a crockpot liner. Add in all the ingredients and set it on high for an hour to help melt the cheese. Stir the ingredients until it’s well mixed. Than turn your crockpot to warm to keep the cheese melty while your guests enjoy eating it.

How do I store Chili Cheese Dip?

Allow the dip to come to room temperature. Then place the leftover chili cheese dip into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to three days. The dip can last longer (5 to 7 days) but will usually have the best texture within the first few days.

How do I reheat this Chili Cheese Dip?

To reheat this, place any leftover dip in a medium saucepan and cook on the stove top over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it just begins to simmer. If the dip is a bit thick stir in a few tablespoons of milk to help thin it out.

You can also reheat this dip in the microwave. Try heating it at 30 to 45 second intervals, stirring in between, until it is warm and creamy.
