But don’t let its health benefits overshadow its rich, indulgent taste—it’s like sipping a latte without the guilt.

In this recipe, I’ll show you how to make the perfect cup of keto butter coffee, whether you’re starting your day or need a midday pick-me-up. Plus, I’ll share tips to customize it to suit your preferences. Get ready to transform your coffee experience and fuel your day the keto way!

Tell someone who isn’t familiar with the keto diet that you put butter (as well as coconut or MCT oil) in your coffee and they will probably look at you like you’re nuts.

Buttered coffee has gained popularity when it was introduced by a company called Bulletproof Coffee. The owner, Dave Asprey, learned about adding butter to coffee while on a trip to Tibet. Bulletproof Coffee contains grass fed butter and a type of MCT oil they call Brain Octane Oil. But don’t worry. You don’t need to have any type of special coconut oil to make your own Keto Butter Coffee at home.

It’s super easy especially if you make your own premade pods!

While the name Bulletproof Coffee is a brand name it has become synonymous with any recipe that has butter and MCT oils added to it. Personally I prefer to call it Keto Butter Coffee.

How Does Keto Butter Coffee Provide Energy?

Keto butter coffee helps to provide needed fats for a boost of energy in those who are keto adapted. If you are keto adapted it means you have been eating fewer carbohydrates and your body has switched over from using glucose (from the carbohydrates) to using fat to provide your body the fuel it needs for energy.

Butter is typically added to coffee along with some type of coconut oil when making keto butter coffee. When possible it’s best to use grass fed butter (salted or unsalted butter) for a variety of reasons including antioxidants, fat soluble vitamins  A, D and K2 as well as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid is a fatty acid that has been shown in some studies to have a positive effect on metabolism). Grass fed butter is higher in CLA than non grass fed butter.

Coconut oil is also used as it provides medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s). These fatty acids are shorter in length than others types found in vegetable oils, animal and fish fats. When you eat MCT’s they go to the liver and are quickly turned into ketones to be used for energy.

MCT’s can be found in solid coconut oil, in liquid or powdered form.

The base of the keto butter coffee recipe starts with a blend of butter and coconut oil. Recipes vary and some will add a sweetener while others do not. I like my butter coffee more creamier so I include some heavy cream, sweetener and a dash of vanilla. This combination gives the coffee a rich, creamy taste that reminds me of the flavored coffees one might get at a local coffee shop.

Does Butter Coffee Cause Weight Gain?

Here’s something that very few people discuss when it comes to keto butter coffee…..it’s supposed to be used as a meal replacement! Having a cup or two or even more of keto butter coffee will help provide the ketones you need to fuel your body. But it also supplies you with calories.

I know that very few people discuss calories in the keto diet. There’s a reason for that. In your former days of eating (before following a keto diet) you might have been eating hundreds if not thousands of calories more than your body needed. This contributed to your weight gain.

I often hear that you don’t have to pay attention to calories on the keto diet. While the keto diet isn’t typically a calorie counting diet, like most traditional low calorie diets, you can still slow your weight loss or even gain weight if you consume more calories than your body uses.

To prevent that from happening use Keto Butter Coffee as a meal replacement or snack. If you drink it in addition to eating a full meal or snack you may find this affects your weight loss. In many cases over consumption can even cause weight gain.

Does Butter Coffee Help With Hunger?

If you have tried a traditional high carb, low calorie diet in the past then you probably felt like you were starving throughout the day. I know I certainly did! And many of those I’ve spoken to did as well.

One bonus to a keto diet is YOU DON’T FEEL HUNGRY!

Quite often people report that they actually feel full for hours after a keto meal. If you don’t feel like you’re starving this can help you with over eating, constant snacking, etc and….you eat fewer calories!

Yes, that’s right. You can cut back on calories and not feel hungry. Now you may have “head hunger” (the desire to eat something without the actual feeling of physical hunger) which is a whole different topic. But you are not physically hungry. The keto diet provides satiety (that feeling of being satisfied/no hunger) AND does it while it reduces calories.

What’s this got to do with gaining weight while drinking Keto Butter Coffee?

Adding this butter/coconut mixture to your coffee will provide you with the energy you need and it will contribute calories. When people find out I’m a registered dietitian they tell me all about their diets as they try to figure out where they are going wrong. I can tell you that in the vast majority of cases of weight regain and weight loss stalls that calories are always the main factor.

Personally, I’ve seen people add this butter blend to their coffee for breakfast, drink two and even three cups of it AND eat a meal.

If you do this you are basically eating two, and sometimes, three meals worth of calories in one sitting!

Keto butter coffee in the morning or at other times of the day is meant to be a meal replacement. It provides you with the energy you need when you can’t have a meal. For many, finding time to eat breakfast in the morning is when they choose to drink it. It keeps you from feeling hungry until you are able to eat a meal.

For others they drink a cup if they feel hungry in between meals. Think of keto butter coffee as a fat bomb. Fat bombs are small bits of sweet or savory ingredients that are eaten as a snack, side dish or meal replacement. They contain ingredients that are high in fats such as cream cheese, butter, coconut oil, avocados, nuts, etc and are eaten when hungry to provide the fat your body needs to convert to ketones.

If you want to avoid weight gain then put a bit of thought into when you want to drink keto butter coffee. You don’t need to drink it daily. Use it when you are not able to eat a meal or if you are hungry in between meals.

How Does Butter Coffee Taste?

One might think it would taste odd to have butter mixed in with your coffee. Since I put cream into my coffee I find the combination of cream, butter and coconut oil gives the coffee a smooth texture and a rich taste. As I don’t drink my black coffee I can’t really comment on the taste of it in coffee without any cream. This recipe includes cocoa powder which gives the coffee a mocha flavor. However, it can be omitted for a straight coffee taste.

How To Make Keto Butter Coffee Pods

keto butter coffee pods

To make your own butter pods you will need some 2 ounce plastic take out containers. These are the kind that you may have seen holding salad dressing in a take out meal. They are the perfect size for creating your own butter pod.

You may also be surprised to find they come in handy for many other things. I keep a stack of these on hand to put small amounts of salad toppings, nuts, olives and other meal related items in when I pack my lunch for work.

Store your extra pods in the freezer until needed.

To use, simple squeeze the sides of the containers to release the frozen pod, place it in your mug and add your favorite type of hot coffee (brewed coffee, instant coffee, french press coffee, decaf coffee, etc). The pod will melt. Add more cream and sweetener to taste if desired. To get it frothy I use a milk frother (it’s a tiny immersion blender) or a fork to whip the coffee a bit (sort of like scrambling an egg).

Add your favorite optional add-ins such as keto coffee creamer or even a pinch of ground cinnamon.
