Ingredients needed for this Christmas Tree Charcuterie Board:

types of candy and chocolates needed to make this Christmas candy charcuterie board

The types and amounts of candy and cookies used for your board will depend upon what is available in your area and the size of your charcuterie board. I usually pick up holiday candy at my local grocery store (Shaw’s, Stop and Shop or Market Basket) as well as Walmart. You can often find a wide selecting of holiday candy at these types of stores during the holiday season.

Here’s what I used for this board:

  • Individually wrapped chocolates – I found a few different types of wrapped chocolates. Some were foiled wrapped with holiday decorations and the others were cellophane wrapped.
  • Chocolate Coins – I often find gold foil chocolate coins in small bags sized for using as little stocking stuffers. Sometimes they are all one size and other times I find bags with different sized coins. Both will work as you can line up same size coins or just layer on different sized coins to create your row.
  • M&M’s – grab your favorite type of M&M’s to use on this board. They have so many different varieties now including seasonal flavors such as mint, toasty vanilla and sugar cookie.
  • Marshmallows – I found several types of holiday themed shaped marshmallows. Walmart had two types of store brand marshmallows and Jet Puffed brand also offered holiday marshmallows. These were the perfect size for the charcuterie board.
  • Gummy Candies – I used a variety of gummy candies including Gummi bears, jelly rings, star shapes and ribbons. Pick candies in the same color to create a row with matching colors or go with a variety of colors.
  • Chocolate Covered Nuts – you can often find these being sold as “Bridge Mix”. Usually it will include a variety of nuts and may also include raisins, pretzel balls and more covered in milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate.
  • Berry Candies – these are the Haribo Berries gummy candies. They are chewy on the inside and crunchy on the outside.
  • Cookies – look for some type of small cookies to use on this board. I found small iced cookies that were a perfect size for this board. You can also use small sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, homemade cookies or any type of decorated Christmas cookies.
  • Sprigs of rosemary – you can use fresh herbs to decorate around the end of your board.

How to make this Candy Charcuterie Board:

Step 1: Choose your board

Use a rectangular wooden board or tray for this charcuterie board due to the shape of the tree.

Don’t have a wooden board or tray? You can also use a large baking sheet. Wrap it in foil or even colored cellophane or wrapping paper. No one will know that you’ve put your favorite baking sheet to use to become a charcuterie board.

Step 2: start layering your candy on the board. The base of the tree will be much wider than the top. I placed some of the bigger items at the very bottom. In this case it was the shaped marshmallows.

The marshmallows were thick and I wanted the designs to be seen so I didn’t pile them up. You can place extras in small bowls to scatter around your buffet table or even just place them around the board.

Layering the different candies to create this candy tree charcuterie board

If you don’t want to put extras out you can save them to be used to refresh the board. About half way through the party I like to take my charcuterie boards back to the kitchen and refill them with whatever goodies and treats are left. Then I bring the board back out for guests to keep snacking.

Step 3: add another layer of candy. Make each layer slightly shorter than the one below it. This will give you the tree shape.

For the next two layers I used wrapped candies followed by different colored gummy rings.

Step 4: work in some of the larger items such as cookies lower down on the tree shape. These items are perfectly sized to line up in a single row.

I followed this with another row of assorted gummy stars, bears and gumdrops. Smaller items can be piled together. You can even mix in a variety of textures and different colors in the same row.

Then a layer of the chocolate covered nuts (aka Bridge Mix).

Step 5: Continue to add in slightly shorter layers of candy until you are 2 or 3 inches away from the top of your board.

Here I used a layer of foil wrapped candy, gold chocolate coins and finally M&M’s.

You’ll want to create a star on top of your tree. I was only able to find these green ribbon gummy candy’s that were folded to make a star shape. If you find gold or yellow colored candy that would be an even better color choice for a candy star.

Step 6: Sprinkle the berry candy over the design to look like ornaments hanging on the tree.

Decorate around the edges of your candy board with fresh herbs if desired.

Variations: You can use a variety of sweets or other candies to decorate around the edges of the board such as candy canes or even ribbon candy.

I don’t have a charcuterie board/platter. What can I use?

No charcuterie board or platter available? No worries. You can easily use a baking sheet (or two) in place of a platter to make a simple charcuterie board.

If your baking sheet has an raised edge that will help keep everything on the board. Is your baking sheet discolored from use? You can line the baking sheet with aluminum foil if desired to hide any discoloration.

You can also use a large cutting board or even place several cutting boards together and wrap in plastic wrap to hold them together before topping with your ingredients.
