A quick note on air fryers:

I have a Power XL 7 quart air fryer. This recipe makes enough to cook the pigs in a blanket up in two batches so they don’t end up overcrowded in the air fryer. You want them to cook up nice and golden brown so they need a little space around each piece. Depending upon the size of your air fryer you may need to cook them in more than two batches.

Ingredients for Pigs In A Blanket

Lil smokies sausages – I used the Hillshire Farms brand but you can also use your favorite cocktail sized sausage or even hot dogs

Crescent rolls – I used Pillsbury crescent rolls. You can also use the crescent roll dough that is sold in a sheet. But then you will need to cut it into smaller pieces to wrap around the sausage.

Egg – use a medium sized or large sized egg

Water – just a little to make the egg wash

Option: Everything Bagel seasoning mix, coarse salt, poppyseeds or sesame seeds.

How to make Air Fryer Pigs In A Blanket

Unroll a can of crescent roll dough. Separate the triangles of dough. Cut them into three pieces (see photo below on how to cut them).

Take the sausage out of the package. I like to rinse the sausages quickly and then pat them dry. This helps remove any excess moisture so the inside of the roll isn’t soggy.

Place a sausage at the wide end of the piece of crescent roll. Roll to the shortest side of each triangle and set aside.

Continue to roll all the sausages in crescent roll dough.

In a small bowl mix the egg with the water. Brush over the tops of the sausage rolls.

If desired, sprinkle a bit of Everything Bagel seasoning mix, coarse salt, poppyseeds or sesame seeds over the top of each sausage roll.

Preheat your air fryer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Place about 12 sausage rolls evenly spaced in a single layer in the air fryer (depending upon your air fryer size). Cook for 4 minutes at 350 degrees.

Turn the sausage rolls and cook at 350 degrees for another 3 or 4 minutes or until they are evenly browned.

Remove and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket

  • Don’t Overcrowd: Cook in batches if needed to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • Chill Before Cooking: If the dough becomes too soft, pop the assembled pigs in a blanket into the fridge for 10 minutes before air frying to help them hold their shape.
  • Check for Doneness: Cooking times may vary by air fryer model, so check at the 6-minute mark and adjust as needed.

Storing & Reheating Leftovers

  • Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze: For longer storage, freeze on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat: Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until warmed through and crispy.

Substitutions:

Lil Smokies – you can easily substitute another type of mini cocktail sausage or mini hot dog in this classic appetizer recipe. Don’t have mini sausages? You can easily cut regular sized hot dogs into 3 pieces and wrap them with the crescent roll dough.

You can also try turkey or chicken sausages for a leaner option. Veggie-based or plant-based sausages work well for a vegetarian twist.

Crescent rolls – Pillsbury now makes a sheet of crescent roll dough. This sheet isn’t cut into triangle pieces. You can swap out the crescent rolls for the sheet of dough. Cut the large sheet of dough into 4 equal pieces vertically. Then cut each vertical piece horizontally into 1 inch wide strips.

You can also use a sheet of puff pastry in place of the crescent dough. Most puff pastry sheets are folded into three pieces. Cut the sections apart and then cut 1 inch wide strips from each section to wrap around the sausages.

Cheesy Upgrade: Add a small slice of cheddar or pepper jack cheese before rolling up the sausages.

Spice It Up: Brush with Dijon mustard or sprinkle with garlic powder before cooking for an extra kick of flavor.

Bacon: add a small piece of crispy bacon to the buttery crescent rolls dough before you roll it up. Use precooked bacon as these appetizers are not cooked long enough to cook the bacon.
