Easy Sugar Free Praline Recipe (Keto, Low Carb)

These easy Sugar Free Praline candies are a buttery, nutty candy that can be enjoyed by those on a keto diet. By using keto-friendly sweeteners these candies have 1 gram of net carbs.

Traditional pralines are made with just pecan halves. They contain a mixture of sugar, butter and cream that are cooked until thickened and then vanilla and pecans are mixed in. This mixture is then spooned out into small piles and allowed to firm up. The butter browns while cooking and, when combined with the molasses in the brown sugar that is used, it gives pralines a delicious taste.

Using keto sweeteners such as monk fruit sweetener, Swerve brand sweetener or your favorite sugar-free sweeteners you can duplicate that browned butter flavor without all the carbs!

At one point I was in the middle of making a batch of these pralines when I realized I was running low on pecans and decided to try tossing in some non traditional praline ingredients such as coconut, sliced almonds and chocolate chunks. The flavor of this candy is so good no matter what you mix in.

Once you’ve got the candy made you can eat it as is or use them to make these delicious keto Praline Cinnamon Muffins.

Ingredients to make this Sugar Free Praline Recipe:

  • Butter – use your favorite brand of butter to make this candy. If you use unsalted butter you’ll want to add a pinch of salt to the mixture to help balance the sweet flavor. You can swap out butter for this homemade cultured butter if desired.
  • Granulated Sweetener – use your favorite keto sweetener such as Monkfruit Sweetener, Swerve, allulose or other sweetener. You can also use the brown sugar substitutes such as Swerve Brown Sugar for this recipe.
  • Heavy Cream / Heavy Whipping Cream – use heavy cream for this recipe for the creamiest flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract – vanilla adds a boost of flavor to these candies.
  • Pecan Halves – you can use pecan halves or broken pieces of pecans. I like to put the pecans in a pan over a low heat to create toasted pecans. Doing this before mixing them into the praline mixture gives them more flavor. But this isn’t needed. It’s an added step that you can do if you have the time.
  • Sliced Almonds – when I was running short of pecans I swap some out for almonds and the candy tasted delicious.
  • Unsweetened Coconut Flakes – use the unsweetened flakes to make sure that you aren’t adding in lots of extra carbs. Most sweetened coconut flakes are made with white sugar (real sugar) so it is high in carbs.
  • Sugar Free Chocolate Chips – use your favorite brand. I’ve used chocolate chunks but chips also work great as well.

You’ll want to have some parchment paper handy as this helps make it easy to make these candies. It’s so much easier to get the pralines up off the baking sheet when its been lined with parchment.

How to make Sugar Free Pecan Pralines:

Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 1: Place the butter into a saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat.

Step 2: When the butter has melted, stir in the Swerve brown sugar (or Swerve and molasses) until completely dissolved.

Step 3: Stir in the heavy whipping cream until well combined and then turn down the heat to medium.

Stirring frequently, cook for 10 minutes. It will begin to foam up. Continue to cook and stir to allow it to thicken. No need to use a candy thermometer for this recipe.

Remove the mixture from the heat.

Step 4: Stir in the vanilla extract, pecan halves and coconut flakes. Stir well to combine. In the picture below I had already made a few batches of pralines and was short on pecans. I went with 1/3 cup pecans, 1/3 cup sliced almonds and 1/3 cup peanuts. It was still delicious.

Let the mixture sit to cool slightly for a few minutes.

Step 5: Stir it before use a large spoon to drop spoonfuls of the praline mixture onto parchment paper. Some of the liquid mixture may pool around the bottom but that’s ok.

Sprinkle some keto friendly chocolate chips on top of each praline and lightly press them down.

Step 6: Place the pralines into the refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour to harden. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

As this is not a sugar based praline it will not become as firm as the traditional pralines. They are best stored in the refrigerator and can even be kept in the freezer.

Freezer Prep Tip:

I spooned one of the batches into these 2 ounce “to go” cups so I could store them in the freezer.

I’m sure they would have lasted in the refrigerator but, honestly, I didn’t want the temptation of them being in there.

These small plastic cups with covers are great for storing other things besides praline candy. I use them to bring salad dressing, cheese or guac to work for my lunch salads. They can be used to portion out things such as nuts which are soooo easy to over eat.

Use these praline candies as a topping to these Keto Cinnamon Praline Muffins. They are a favorite treat because they taste like pecan pie. The praline mixture on top soaks into the muffin leaving behind candied pecans and tasty chunks of chocolate which makes a crunchy topping.

Besides using these sugar free pralines as a muffin topping it also tastes delicious when broken in small pieces and sprinkled over vanilla keto ice cream.
