Pumpkin Spice Blend Recipe

Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves make up this delicious pumpkin spice blend

You probably already have most of the spices needed to make your own pumpkin spice blend at home in your kitchen.

What is pumpkin spice made of?

This blend of spices has been found in cookbooks back to the 1800’s and has been used in a wide range of recipes from desserts to main dishes, side dishes and drinks.

You can quickly whip up this spice mixture and enjoy it in your own recipes.

The spices generally found in pumpkin spice mix include the following:

Ground Cinnamon:

Ground cinnamon

Cinnamon is the main flavor in pumpkin spice. For the best flavor you should use your ground cinnamon within a year of purchase. After that time you’ll notice that the flavor begins to go down.

Ground ginger:

Ground ginger

Dry ground ginger has a long shelf life in the kitchen (2 to 3 years). For the best shelf life store your herbs and spices away from heat in a cool dry place. This means don’t store them in a cabinet over the stove. This helps to prolong the shelf life.

Nutmeg:

Ground nutmeg

This recipe calls for ground nutmeg. However, if you have whole nutmeg you can easily grate your own fresh nutmeg for the best taste.

Ground cloves:

Ground cloves

If you don’t have ground cloves in your kitchen you’ll want to buy a very small bottle of it. While this recipe doesn’t call for much it really adds to the flavor of this spice blend. I like to add a pinch of cloves to just about any recipe that calls for cinnamon.

Some pumpkin spice recipes also call for allspice. It has a flavor that is kind of like a mixture of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. I don’t usually include it in my pumpkin spice blend as I think it doesn’t add much to the mixture that the other spices don’t already contribute.

Can you substitute pumpkin spice blend for cinnamon?

Yes you can!

This mixture can be used to replace cinnamon in lots of recipes. It adds a deeper depth of flavor when used in place of cinnamon especially in baked goods. Imagine how good your muffins, pies, cakes and drinks will taste.

Try stirring some of this blend into your chia pudding, coffee, keto pancakes or chaffle recipes.

How long will pumpkin spice mix last?

As a general rule, spices will stay fresh for about 2 years if they are stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool dark place. They will begin losing their potency over time so remember to use them up.

Remember to mark the date that the mixture was made on your jar so you can keep track of how long you have had the blend in your cabinets. If you notice that it doesn’t smell or taste as strong as it did before it might be time to make a new batch.

Now that you’ve made this spice blend why not try using it in some of these recipes:

Pumpkin Muffins

Pumpkin Cake Mix Cookies

Pumpkin Macaroon Cookies

Baked Pumpkin Custard
