Compound butter is simply soft butter that has other ingredients mixed into such as herbs, spices, cheese, sundried tomatoes, citrus juice and more.

Dried herbs are great for dishes that will be cooked or baked. It helps to bring out the flavor of the dried herbs. However, this is one recipe in which you will want to use fresh herbs. This will give the best flavor when using this butter.

Check the FAQ section below for some great tips on using up and storing the left over herbs so they don’t sit in your refrigerator slowly turning into green mush.

Butter – you can use salted butter or unsalted butter to make this recipe. Let the butter come to room temperature as you will want it soft enough to work the herbs into the butter. Why not try making this delicious Cultured Butter to use in this recipe.

Garlic Cloves – while you can use diced or finely minced garlic cloves try using a microplaner to turn the cloves into fine bits that more evenly mix into the butter.

Fresh Lemon – you’ll need the zest as well as the juice.

Fresh Herbs – I like to use a combination of herbs including parsley, rosemary and chives to make my butter.

Salt and Black Pepper – you’ll want to add a bit more salt even if you use salted butter. Use your favorite table salt or kosher salt.

How to make Garlic Herb Compound Butter for Steak

It’s so easy to make compound (flavored) butter. Here are some prep tips to help you quickly make this recipe.

Before starting to make this recipe you will want to allow the butter to come to room temperature. The butter needs to be soft so you can work the lemon, herbs, salt and pepper into the mixture.

If you are using fresh garlic you can finely dice it or use a microplaner to create ultra fine pieces of garlic. This makes it easier to infuse the butter with delicious garlic flavor.

You’ll need half of one lemon for this recipe. Put it in the microwave for about 10 seconds. This will allow you to get more juice out of it. Roll the lemon across the counter gently pressing while you roll it. This will make it easier to juice the lemon.

Start by zesting the lemon first. It’s easier to do before you slice it to juice it. Zest the whole lemon. You won’t use it all but I’ve got some tips on what to do with the left over juice at the end of this recipe.

Prepare the chopped herbs by finely mincing the rosemary, parsley and chives. Set aside until you’re ready to make this flavored butter.

Add all the ingredients to a large bowl. Using a fork mash the other ingredients into the softened butter.

You can store this butter in a air tight container in the refrigerator until needed or form it into a log. The log shape makes it easy to store and you can quickly slice off what you need.

To form it into a log spoon the butter into the center of a piece of plastic wrap in the shape of a log. Wrap the plastic wrap around the butter and then gently roll to make the log shape even.

Refrigerate the butter log for at least an hour to allow it to firm up. You can also place it in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes.

How to use this garlic herb compound butter:

To use this butter simply slice off the amount of butter you want to add on top of steaks, baked potatoes, pasta, vegetables and more.

Allow the flavored butter to come to room temperature and use it to spread over your favorite bread to create a delicious garlic herb bread.

How to store this garlic herb butter:

Store this flavored butter in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a week. While butter has a longer storage left the fresh herbs have a much shorter one.

You can extend the storage life of this flavored butter but keeping it in the freezer. Place the wrapped log of butter into a freezer bag and store up to 3 months in the freezer. When you need some butter remove the log and carefully slice off pieces.

You can also make individual serving sized pieces of butter to freeze. Place the butter log in the refrigerator so it begins to firm up but doesn’t become hard (about 15 minutes). Remove and slice the butter. Place the individual slices on piece of parchment paper or waxed paper on a baking sheet. Freeze the slices for an hour until hard. Remove the butter slices from the paper and place in a freezer bag or freezer safe container. Store in the freezer for 1 to 2 months.

What kind of parsley should I use?

You are likely to find two different types of parsley in your local stores. Flat leaf/Italian parsley or curly parsley. Flat parsley, also called Italian parsley, looks just like it sounds. The leaves are flat shaped. Curly parsley has ruffled leaves. This is the type of parsley that is often used to garnish dishes as the leaves are very decorative. See the picture below to see the difference between the two types of parsley.

Flat parsley is most often used to flavor foods as it has a more intense or robust flavor. This is the type you will want to use for this butter. If you can’t find flat parsley you can also substitute curly parsley though you may want to add another teaspoon or two to add more flavor.

Is this flavored butter keto or low carb?

Yes it is and it will make a wonderful addition to add amazing flavor to any keto steaks, burgers or low carb vegetables that you make. Add a slice of this herb filled garlic compound butter to your cauliflower mashed potatoes or a bowlful of cauliflower rice. It’s an absolutely delicious addition to your keto diet recipes.

Can I freeze this flavored compound butter?

Yes. Flavored butter can easily be stored in the freezer. Wrap the butter tightly in plastic wrap and place in a freezer bag. For best flavor store up to 3 months in the freezer. It can last longer but you will find that the flavor of the fresh herbs will slowly begin to go down over time.

How can I store the left over herbs?

To store leftover herbs including fresh rosemary and parsley wrap the stems with some damp paper towels and store in the refrigerator. This will help to extend their life.

You can also remove all of the leaves from the rosemary and parsley and mix with just enough olive oil to coat them. Place the chopped leaves into a small freezer bag and store in the freezer. Any time you want to add a burst of flavor to something you are cooking just add some of the chopped up herbs directly from the freezer.

Pour the left over lemon juice into an ice cube tray and freeze. Use the ice cubes to add extra flavor to water, lemonade or even into soups.
