Orange fluff is an old-fashioned recipe that’s been making appearances at family parties for longer than I can remember. You may have seen it being called orange creamsicle fluff, orange dump salad, orange jello fluff or orange jello salad.

This fluffy salad recipe is similar to Ambrosia salad as they are creamy fruit salad. No matter what you call it everyone will love this dessert. It’s a family favorite that you will make again and again.

  • Whipped Topping – you can use just about any type of frozen whipped topping for this recipe. Depending upon the cost I’ve made it with store brands as well as Cool Whip as well as sugar free Cool Whip. They all came out great. You can even use homemade whipped topping.
  • Orange Gelatin Powder – you’ll want a box of your favorite orange gelatin. Again go with your favorite. Store brands taste just as good as name brand (Jell-O) gelatin. Use whatever works with your budget.
  • Mandarin Oranges – drain the liquid well from one can of mandarin oranges
  • Mini Marshmallows – mini sized marshmallows work best in this recipe.
  • Cottage Cheese – adds a creamy texture to your fluff. I use regular cottage cheese but you can also use light or fat free cottage cheese.
  • Sweetened Shredded Coconut – use your favorite brand of shredded coconut.

How to make Orange Fluff

step by step process shots showing how to make this orange fluff salad

Step 1: To make this orange fluff – combine the whipped topping and orange gelatin powder in a large mixing bowl and mix until no white streaks remain. Don’t mix the gelatin powder with water. Just sprinkle it over the whipped topping and mix it in with a rubber spatula.

Step 2: Add the cottage cheese, shredded coconut, mini marshmallows and mandarin oranges. Fold them in until fully combined.

Serve immediately or store in the fridge, covered, until ready to serve.

How to serve Orange Fluff:

Orange fluff is a delicious dessert that I just serve as it is in a bowl. We like to top a dish of this orange dessert with a few extra slices of mandarin oranges and even an extra sprinkle of marshmallows or coconut.

This simple recipe also makes a fruity side dish that goes well with angel food cake, pound cake and even cookies.

How to store Orange Fluff:

Store any leftovers in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

You’ll want to stir it well after storing in the fridge as some of the liquid will migrate to the top. Giving it a quick stir will combine any of this liquid back into the dessert.

Orange Fluff Recipe Swaps

Try some of these recipe swaps:

  • Swap out the package of orange jell-o and the fruit for something different. Try cherry gelatin and some cherry pie filling. Strawberry jello and diced fresh strawberries. Raspberry jello mix with fresh raspberries. Use a different jello flavor to change up the taste.
  • Swap out the Jell-O for vanilla pudding or even cheesecake pudding mix.
  • Try adding in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Add in a 1/2 to 1 cup of pineapple tidbits for a tropical flavor
  • Use colored or flavored mini marshmallows in place of the regular flavored mini marshmallows

Can you freeze Orange Fluff

No you can’t freeze this orange fluff salad recipe.

When this dessert thaws you will find that the mixtures separates and becomes watery. Freezing also changes the texture of the fruit as well as the texture of the marshmallows. I’ve found that this recipe is so quick to make that freezing doesn’t save much time.

The recipe also doesn’t make a huge amount of dessert so there’s also not a ton of leftovers to deal with that you will want to freeze them.

Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of store-bought Cool Whip?

Yes you can use your favorite homemade whipped cream in place of the store bought whipped topping or Cool Whip.
