Start out your day with these sweet, tasty and easy to make strawberry cream cheese crescent rolls. They are made using store bought crescent dough and are filled with a cream cheese mixture that’s topped with strawberry jam.
These strawberry cream cheese crescent rolls are perfect for a relaxing weekend breakfast or any time you want to serve a delicious homemade treat. Using store bought crescent dough makes these so easy to make. The combination of the strawberry jam with the cream cheese filling makes this taste like strawberry cheesecake.
Ingredients for Strawberry Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls
You will need the following ingredients to make this recipe:
One can Pillsbury crescent dough sheet – Crescent dough sheets make it easy to fill each roll with cream cheese mixture. The crescent dough sheets differ a bit from crescent roll dough. While both types of dough are sold in a cardboard tube the main difference is the crescent roll dough is pre-sliced into triangle shapes so you can easily separate the pieces to form into a crescent roll. Crescent dough is one sold sheet so you can cut it yourself into other shapes and sizes. See the FAQ section below for more information on this.
8 ounces cream cheese, softened – I used regular, full fat cream cheese. You can also use light or fat free cream cheese if you would like.
3 tablespoons milk – adding this helps to make the cream cheese soft and easily spreadable. You can easily substitute almond milk, soy milk or whatever type of milk alternative you like to use.
2 tablespoons granulated sugar – this adds some sweetness to the cream cheese and makes it taste more like cheesecake crescent rolls.
1 tablespoon lemon juice – this adds flavor to the cream cheese mixture.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract – adds delicious vanilla flavor to the cream cheese filling.
1/3 cup of strawberry jam or preserves – use your favorite strawberry jam or preserves. I love using preserves over jam because it has pieces of strawberries in it. The jam is made from fruit pulp or puree so you don’t find larger pieces of fruit in it.
½ cup red candy melts/candy coating discs – I used Sweet Tooth Fairy Meltables which is a candy coating sold in Michael’s craft stores. Don’t have a Michael’s near you? You can also find colored candy melts (also called candy coating) online on Amazon. Check out Wilton’s Candy Melts (Amazon link). They come in a variety of colors. Candy coating/melts are easy to use and, unlike using white chocolate chips, they remain smooth when they are melted. No need to add additional oil when melting in order to create a smooth chocolate to use as drizzle.
How to make Strawberry Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls
1. Start by making the cream cheese filling. Place the cream cheese, milk, lemon juice and vanilla extract in a bowl. Using a hand mixer blend until smooth
2. Sprinkle the sugar over the cream cheese mixture. Continue to mix until blended. Set the cream cheese mixture aside.
3. Preheat oven to 375 F and spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
4. Unroll the crescent dough sheet. Cut it into 8 equal pieces (see the photos).
5. Spread a rounded teaspoon of cream cheese on each square. Leave space around all 4 edges.
6. Spread a teaspoon of jelly on top of the cream cheese.
7. Starting on one end begin rolling the dough. As you roll it use a fork or your fingers to gently crimp the edges of the dough as you roll it. This will help to keep the filling from leaking out while baking.
8. Place filled crescent dough on the baking sheet. Bake 10 to 13 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
Topping the stuffed crescent rolls:
1. Follow the directions on your package of candy melts/candy coating. Use a sandwich bag to help you pipe the melted candy on top of each crescent roll.
2. Place a plastic sandwich or storage bag into a cup. Place it with the point of one corner facing the bottom of the cup. Spoon the melted candle melts/candy coating into the bag. Squeeze it into one corner of the bag and twist the top to make it easier to hold.
3. Snip a tiny piece of the corner from the plastic bag. The smaller the piece removed the thinner the drizzled candy melt. Drizzle the melted candy coating back and forth over the top of the crescents.
4. Set the finished crescents aside to allow the drizzle to harden. Place the baking sheet with the crescents in the refrigerator for 5 to 10 minutes if you want the drizzle to harden quickly.
Storage Information:
These strawberry cream cheese crescent rolls taste the best the day they are baked. Store any leftovers in a ziptop bag or covered container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
Due to the drizzled candy coating topping these stuffed crescent rolls they can not be reheated in the microwave, oven or air fryer without the drizzle melting. For the best taste, if stored in the refrigerator, leave them on the counter in the ziplock bag or container until they come to room temperature before eating.
Tips, Substitutions and FAQ’s:
What can I do with the leftover cream cheese filling?
Don’t toss out the remaining cream cheese filling! It makes a delicious spread to use on pancakes, waffles or even bagels! Use it as a waffle/pancake spread when you make this delicious breakfast board.
Can I use something other than candy coating/candy melts?
If you don’t have access to candy coating/candy melts (created so they melt easily and stay smooth) you can use white chocolate that has been colored. You will need white bark or white chocolate chips, candy coloring and several teaspoons of vegetable or olive oil. White chocolate chips are designed so they hold their shape when baked. Due to how they are made you will need to add a teaspoon or two of oil to the chocolate while melting it. This helps to create a smooth melted chocolate.
To melt: Place the chocolate chips or chocolate bark into a microwave safe bowl. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, olive oil or even shortening over the top of the chips. Microwave, uncovered, on 50 percent of power for 1 minute. Stir. Continue to microwave on 50 percent power for 30 seconds at a time until the chocolate is melted. If you find that the chocolate is still thick stir in another teaspoon of oil.
To color the chocolate, you will need special candy coloring or food coloring that does not contain water as an ingredient. If a small amount of water gets into the melted chocolate, it will cause it to firm up. Candy coloring is made so this will not happen. You can find Wilton Candy Coloring (Amazon link) online and in the baking section of many local stores.
Can I top these with something other than melted chocolate drizzle?
Sure you can. You can easily dress up the look of these crescent rolls by topping with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. I like to place a teaspoon of powdered sugar into a small wire sieve and gently tap it to dust the tops with a bit of powdered sugar.
I can’t find crescent dough. Can I use a can of crescent rolls instead?
Yes, you can use the crescent rolls that come in the can. This is the same dough as the crescent dough. The only difference is the crescent rolls have been pre-cut into triangle shapes so they can be easily rolled into the crescent shape. This dough can be used but you will need to pinch the seems of the dough together to form a single piece of dough. Be sure to pinch and seal the seems or the filling will leak out while baking.
What to serve this with?
These strawberry cream cheese crescent rolls make a delicious dessert. They also make a tasty addition to any type of breakfast board or buffet. Serve them with a side of fresh strawberries, whipped cream as well as your favorite breakfast items.
I love to use them when making this breakfast board for family gatherings. I include them with our favorite waffles, pancakes, sausage as well as fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. Don’t forget to include syrup for the waffles and pancakes. Include a container with the extra cream cheese filling on the side. It also makes a delicious spread to use on the waffles and pancakes.
