Reindeer Christmas Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
With a few simple ingredients you can quickly make these fun treats for the holidays. It’s a great project to make with kids. Simply prep all the rice krispie treat shapes before hand and then gather the kids to put them together.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients to make Reindeer Rice Krispie Treats
Rice Krispie cereal – I used a generic brand from Walmart. Just about any type of krispie type cereal can be used with this recipe. I’ve made them lots of times using different brands.
Mini Marshmallows – I like using mini marshmallows because they are easy to measure out. Don’t have mini marshmallows or can’t find them? Check out the information in the FAQ section for other sizes that can be used in this recipe.
Butter – I used salted butter for this recipe. The small amount of salt in the butter seems to balance the sweetness from the marshmallows.
Vanilla extract – Adds a delicious vanilla flavor to these treats.
Chocolate Covered Mini Pretzels – I used a brand called Flipz.
White chocolate melts – I used Sweet Tooth Fairy Melts found at Michael’s craft stores. If your local store sells white chocolate bark you can use that. White chocolate chips also work though you may have to add a 1/2 teaspoon of oil to them if the melted chocolate is not thin enough to drizzle it.
Red and Brown M&M’s – These are for the reindeer noses.
Candy Eyes – You can find these in the baking section of your local grocery store (look in the baking section) or craft store such as Michael’s.
You’ll also need the following equipment:
9×13 baking dish
Plastic sandwich size bag
Non stick cooking spray
How to make Reindeer Rice Krispie Treats
Prepare a 9×13 baking dish by spraying with nonstick spray
In a large pot melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Add in the marshmallows and stir continuously until they have melted.
Stir in the rice krispie cereal until coated with the marshmallow cream.
Spoon the coated rice krispies into the prepared baking dish and gently press down to spread the mixture.
Allow the rice krispie mixture to cool for 30 minutes.
Using a spatula gently loosen the edges of the treats. Turn the dish over onto a clean cutting board. Use a large knife to trim the edges so they are straight. Set aside the trimmed pieces.
Cut the block of treats down the middle the long way. This will split the treats into two pieces.
Cut each section on an angle to form triangle shaped pieces.
Place the white chocolate melts into a microwave safe container. Follow the directions for your brand of white chocolate melts. If they do not have directions, then microwave for 1 minute at 50% power or on the defrost setting. Stir well. If not melted place in microwave for 30 seconds and stir again.
Place a small amount of melted chocolate on the back of one corner of a mini pretzel and stick it to a corner of the treat (opposite from the point of the triangle) to be an antler. Repeat for the other side.
Using a spoon or a toothpick, place a small amount of melted white chocolate on the back of each eye and position on the reindeer.
Using a spoon or a toothpick place a small amount of the melted white chocolate on the side of the M&M that has the printed logo. Press the red or brown M&M on the tip of the triangle to make the nose. Some will be Rudolph Reindeers (red nose) and other will be one of the other 8 Reindeer that pull Santa’s sleigh (brown nose).
Place the decorated treats on a baking sheet and put in the refrigerator or 5 to 10 minutes to harden the chocolate.
Serve and enjoy!
TIPS:
Candy eyes can be found online (Amazon as well as candy/cake supply stores) as well as local crafts stores or candy/cake shops.
If you can find candy eyes in your local store, and don’t want to purchase them online, you can create an eye using white chocolate and a mini chocolate chip. The chocolate chip will be the pupil of the eye. That should give you an idea of how big to make the white chocolate portion of the eye. Place a small dab of melted white chocolate where you want to position each eye. Take a mini chocolate chip and place it, point side down, into the center of the white chocolate.
FAQ’S:
How do I keep the rice krispie mixture from sticking to my hands?
The marshmallow coated rice krispies are very sticky. To help keep them from sticking to your hands when pressing them into the baking dish just coat your fingers with a small amount of oil, butter or even nonstick spray. This will allow you to press them down without the mixture sticking to your fingers.
What do I do with the left-over pieces after I trimmed the treats?
I don’t like to waste the trimmings. If you or the kids haven’t snacked on them while making these you can place them on a piece of parchment or a baking sheet and drizzle any remaining white chocolate over them. Put them into the refrigerator to harden and enjoy! They taste just as delicious as the decorated reindeer shaped treats and nothing will go to waste.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Place the treats in a covered container and store at room temperature for 5 to 7 days.
