Here’s a fun Valentines Day Dessert Charcuterie Board you can make using a mix of store bought items and cute homemade heart-shaped cookies. Pink frosting for dipping the cookies dresses up this sweet board in fun heart shapes. Serve it up for date night or even for a fun night at home with the family.
You can go with festive red and pink snacks and treats purchased at your local grocery store or make the sweet buttercream frosting and heart shape cookies from scratch. The recipes are included below.
Valentine’s Day Dessert Board
The first thing you will need is a board to use as a base for your charcuterie board.
I used a wooden board with a handle. You can use a cutting board, serving tray or platter.
For a Valentine’s Day twist, consider using a heart-shaped board to add a romantic touch.
Alternatively, a rectangular or circular board can work just as well. Ensure that the board is spacious enough to accommodate a variety of sweet treats.
Don’t have a cutting board or a platter big enough to use? Why not grab a baking sheet (choose one with an edge) and use it as a charcuterie board. If your baking sheet has discoloration on it from use, simply wrap the pan in foil to create a clean surface to build your charcuterie board on.
Ingredients for this Valentines Dessert Charcuterie Board
Here’s what you’ll need to make this fun board:
- Raspberries and Strawberries – fresh fruit is a great addition to any type of dessert board. You can even dress this board up by adding a few chocolate-covered strawberries.
- Buttercream Frosting – use your favorite store bought buttercream frosting tinted a light pink with a bit of food dye or create your own buttercream frosting with this recipe.
- Cookies – you’ll want a few different types of cookies to dip into the buttercream frosting. This board was made with graham crackers, strawberry wafer cookies and cute homemade heart-shaped cookies. The recipe for the cookies are included below.
- Pretzels – something a little salty goes well with the sweet frosting. Everyone enjoys having pretzels on this board.
- Valentine’s M&M Candies – these seasonal candies make a great addition to the board. You can easily swap it out for other festive red and pink small candies.
- Sprinkles – include some fun sprinkles with a color scheme or design for the holiday. Once you dip your cookies or pretzels in the frosting why not dip them in decorative sprinkles.
Other ideas for dessert board dippers at your local grocery store: sugar cookies, M&M cookies, chocolate chip cookies, Oreo cookies, shortbread cookies or even animal crackers.
Using a large board? Try placing small bowls on the board to help fill the empty spaces and fill with holiday candies, marshmallows or other sweet treats.
Making this Valentines Dessert Charcuterie Board:
To assemble the board start by piping several heart shapes on your board. How many you make will depend upon the size of your board. Fill the heart shapes in with additional frosting.
Use a spatula and smooth out the frosting.
Once you have placed the frosting on the board you will want to add in the larger items such as paper cups or small bowls with the candies and sprinkles on the charcuterie board.
The number of paper cups or bowls you will want to use will depend upon the size of your board. You’ll want to place them in a location that will allow you to spread your dippers out around the frosting as well as the cups.
Next begin to arrange small piles of cookies and pretzels around the paper cups. Be sure to leave some larger sized gaps on the board so you can add in the fruit.
Fill in the gaps between the cookies with the fresh fruit. Since this is a sweet charcuterie board for Valentine’s Day I used raspberries and strawberries to go with the red colors associated with the holiday of love.
If whole strawberries are too big for the area you are trying to fill you can cut them in half.
You’ll want to add enough items on the board that the entire board is filled. If you have open areas on the board fill in the gaps with smaller items or smaller candies.
If you want to make your own homemade heart shaped shortbread cookies follow this simple recipe below.
Making Heart Shaped Shortbread Cookies:
Here’s what you’ll need to make these quick 3 ingredient cookies.
- Butter – you’ll want to use cold, salted butter to make these cookies
- All Purpose Flour – use your favorite brand of flour
- Light Brown Sugar – I prefer to use brown sugar (either light brown or dark brown sugar) for the flavor that it adds to the cookies
- Heart Cookie Cutter – you’ll want a small 1 inch cookie cutter
How to make Heart Shortbread Cookies:
First prepare the cookie dough by cutting the cold butter into tiny cubes.
Add the butter and sugar to a large stand mixing bowl with a paddle attachment and mix on medium speed until combined. Approximately 30 seconds.
On low speed, slowly add 1.5 cups of the flour to the bowl until mostly combined. Pause to scrape the sides. The mixture should be crumbly but somewhat combined.
Sprinkle ¼ cup of the remaining flour onto a clean surface. Transfer cookie dough onto the surface and knead until a soft playdough like consistency forms. Add the remaining flour if necessary. The dough should not be sticky.
Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 min. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
Once the cookie dough has chilled, place on a floured surface. Roll out until dough is approximately ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut out heart shaped cookies.
Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 13 minutes. Cookies should be just slightly brown on the bottom. Careful not to overcook.
Recipe Swaps:
Here’s some ideas on ingredient swaps for this easy to make valentine’s charcuterie board:
M&M’s – swap out the M&M’s for other small candies such as Conversation Hearts, holiday colored jelly beans, wrapped Valentine chocolates such as Hershey Kisses.
Cookies – look for small holiday shaped/colored cookies or even sandwich cookies to use in place of the wafer cookies, graham crackers and shortbread. You’ll want something that tastes good with buttercream frosting on it.
A good charcuterie board will have a variety of textures and different colors (themed colors). Pick your favorite treats to use on the board.
