These Valentines Day Chocolate Covered Pretzels are an easy to make sweet treat that will delight your Valentine. The sweet, creamy chocolate and the crisp, crunchy pretzel with just a hint of salt is such a winning combination you may find yourself making these for more than just Valentine’s Day.
You can make these Valentine’s Day treats up to give as gifts or to serve as a dessert.
To give as gifts you’ll want to get some plastic gift bags from a local craft store. They should be about 9.5 inches long to fit the length of a pretzel rod. If you are using another pretzel shape then smaller bags will work as packaging.

Ingredients to make Chocolate Covered Pretzels
These only takes a few ingredients to make.
- Pretzel Rods – use your favorite brand of pretzel rod. You can find them in most stores sold in bags and in plastic containers. There’s even some specialty pretzel rods in the stores such as honey wheat and even gluten free pretzel rods. Use one of these varieties if you prefer.
- Chocolate Melts or Candy Wafers – I used white chocolate and red colored chocolate. You can use any flavor you would like including dark chocolate and milk chocolate. You can find these bags of button shaped pieces of candy coating in many craft stores as well as some grocery stores. My local Walmart has them in the craft section but they also have Great Value Almond Bark, Great Value Candy Coating and even Ghirardelli Melting Wafers in the section where the chocolate chips are found.
- Sprinkles – You can use any type of sprinkle to make these chocolate covered pretzels. There are plenty of Valentine sprinkles available such as hearts, arrows, roses, X’s and O’s and lots of sprinkles in pink, red and white Valentine’s day colors.
- Baking pan – you’ll want a baking pan or cookie sheet to place the dipped pretzels on while the chocolate hardens.
- Parchment Paper – this is to line the baking pan so the dipped pretzels are easy to remove once the chocolate is hard. You can also use wax paper to line the pans.
How to make Chocolate Dipped Pretzels
Prep: Get your dipping area set up and you will be surprised at how quickly you can prepare the dipped pretzels.
Line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
Place your sprinkles into small bowls to make it easier to grab a few pinches of them.
Step 1: Melt the chocolate
Add the white melting chocolates to a microwave safe bowl. Follow the package directions on your bag of candy melts. Once the chocolate is melted and smooth transfer it to a tall glass.
Step 2: Dip the pretzel in chocolate
Dip pretzel rod into the middle of the glass. Spin the rod around until it is covered with the chocolate. If you want to cover more of the pretzel rod simply tilt the glass (don’t spill the melted chocolate) and spin the pretzel rod to coat it.
Lift up the rod and allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
Step 3: Decorate the pretzel
Hold the coated pretzel over a plate or bowl to catch the excess sprinkles. Take a pinch of the sprinkles and sprinkle them over the melted chocolate. Place the pretzel on the parchment lined baking sheet.
Continue to dip and decorate the pretzels until half of the available pretzel rods have been dipped in the white chocolate.
Repeat steps above using the red melting wafers to dip and decorate the remaining pretzel rods.
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to allow chocolate to set.
Once the chocolate has hardened you can package the pretzel rods or creatively place them on to a dessert charcuterie board or serve them for dessert.
Store any leftovers at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
Are chocolate melts or candy wafers real chocolate?
This is a type of “chocolate” known as confectioners coating. The cocoa butter found in chocolate has been removed and replaced with vegetable oil to make it easier to melt.
Chocolate that contains cocoa butter needs to go through a process called tempering. Without this process the cocoa butter will move to the surface of the chocolate is exposed to warmer temperatures and then cools back down. This creates a dusty grey looking discoloration on the surface of the chocolate. It’s caused by the cocoa butter separating out from the chocolate and then re-solidifying on the surface of the candy.
Bloom is harmless but it doesn’t look pretty. Since candy coating or candy melts don’t contain cocoa butter they are easy to melt, stay smooth and creamy and you won’t find bloom forming on the outside.
Can you use other types of chocolate?
You can use other types of chocolate such as chocolate chips to make these chocolate dipped pretzels.
Since chocolate chips (milk chocolate, dark chocolate or even white chocolate) doesn’t melt as easily as the candy melts you can add a bit of vegetable shortening to help thin it out so it is easier to dip the pretzels.
Place chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl. If using a larger piece of chocolate chop it up into small, similar sized pieces. Add a teaspoon of vegetable shortening to a cup of chocolate chips to help make it smooth.
Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and repeat. When the chocolate is mostly melted, with a few tiny pieces left to melt, stop microwaving and continue to stir as the last few pieces will melt. Continue to follow the directions for dipping and decorating the Valentine pretzels.
Can you use other types of pretzels?
Sure you can dip just about any shape of pretzel such as pretzel twists.
If you are using smaller shaped pretzels you will want to keep the melted chocolate coatings in a bowl to make dipping easier.
Use a fork to help turn over smaller pretzels to evenly coat them and remove them from the chocolate. Gently tap the fork on the side of the bowl to get the excess chocolate off.
Recipe Variations:
Change Chocolate – Try different types of chocolate such as milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate or even choose other colors.
Change Pretzel Shapes – Use other types of pretzel shapes
Change Decorations – try using a different type of decoration in place of sprinkles such as using white chocolate drizzle on the red dipped pretzels and red drizzle on the white dipped pretzels.
Crushed Cookies or Candy – Instead of sprinkles use your favorite cookies or candies that have been crushed up. Try using crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate chip cookies, Heath Bars, Butterfingers, etc.
