This mix is so easy to make and you probably have most of the ingredients. If you don’t have buttermilk at home check out the tips below for making a quick version of buttermilk with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Check out the FAQ section below to find out more about buttermilk powder.

If you are looking to purchase buttermilk powder it can be found in most grocery stores in the baking section or where ever you find other canned milks such as evaporated milk or sweetened condensed milk.

Ingredients to make Homemade Ranch Seasoning Mix:

ingredients to make this ranch seasoning mix recipe
  • Buttermilk Powder – use your favorite brand of buttermilk powder. Don’t have any or can’t find it at the grocery store? Check out the FAQ section below for substitutes for this ingredient.
  • Dried Herbs and Spices – this includes dried parsley, dried chives, onion flakes, powdered garlic, lemon pepper, dill and salt.

You’ll want to use garlic powder or granulated garlic for this recipe. Don’t use garlic salt. It doesn’t have enough garlic flavor and will end up making this seasoning mix extremely salty tasting.

How to make this Ranch Seasoning Mix:

Add ingredients to a bowl and mix well. Store in a covered container for up to 3 months.

It doesn’t get much easier than that!

How to store Ranch Seasoning Mix:

You’ll want to store your ranch seasoning mix in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Use a mason jar, canning jar or some kind of glass or plastic container that can be well sealed. If you store it in something such as a plastic bag you’ll find that the buttermilk will pull moisture in from the air and the mixture will begin to clump.

If you’ve ever had a plastic container of store bought ranch mix on hand you’ll notice that it becomes harder once it’s been sitting around for a while. The mix is still good but it will need to be broken up or ground back into a powder to make it easier to use.

What is buttermilk powder?

Buttermilk powder is simply buttermilk that has been dehydrated until it becomes powdery.

Look for this in your local grocery store in the same section as canned evaporated milk or where you find powdered milk.

How do you use buttermilk powder?

Powdered buttermilk is great to keep on hand. It can be used in so many recipes:

  • Use it to replace milk in your favorite pancake or waffle recipes.
  • Use it to replace milk in your cornbread recipes.
  • Use it to replace milk in your muffin recipes.
  • Mix some in your sour cream or mayonnaise when making a dressing to create a creamy version of that recipe.
  • Soak your chicken before cooking in buttermilk powder mixed with some water to create butter milk. It makes it super tender and delicious.

To make buttermilk liquid mix 1/4 cup of buttermilk powder into 1 cup of water or milk. This will give you 1 cup of buttermilk.

If you can’t find buttermilk powder locally you can always order some online such as this Anthony’s Premium Buttermilk Powder on Amazon. Store the extra in the refrigerator. There’s really lots of uses for buttermilk and you will be happy to have this on hand.
