What kinds of candy should I use for making cookies?
Don’t use candies that you wouldn’t typically see in cookies. This includes hard candies such as Jolly Ranchers, sour candies and any type of fruity or gummy candies.
Typically I separate all the mint candies such as peppermint patties and Andes Chocolates out from the other types of chocolate bars. Let’s face it. Peppermint and Reese’s peanut butter cups just don’t taste good together. If I have a bunch of mint chocolate I make these into there own cookies.
Here’s some types of candy that tastes great in cookies:
- Any type of chocolate bar (milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate)
- Snickers Bars
- Kit Kats
- Reese’s peanut butter cups
- Milky ways
- Heath bars
- Mr. Goodbar
- Three Musketeers
- M&M’s as well as Reese’s Pieces
- 100 Grand Bars
- Almond Joy Bars
- Mound Bars
- Twix
- Payday
How many types of candy should I use?
How many types of candy you use is up to you. I chop up a variety of candy bars and then measure out the amount needed for my recipes. This way I get a bit of everything.
If you prefer you can pick a few of your favorites and just use those to make your cookies.
How to store these cookies:
Allow the cookies to cool and store them at room temperature in an airtight container.
You can also freeze leftover cookies by placing them in a freezer storage bag. Remove the excess air from the bag. Make sure to mark the date on the bag. They will last in the freezer for 3 to 6 months.
Can I freeze the cookie dough?
Yes most types of cookie dough can be frozen.
To make it easier to bake cookies later you will want to freeze individual cookie dough balls. To do this roll the dough into balls or use a cookie scoop to portion out the dough on a cookie sheet. Place the sheet in the freezer for 2-3 hours. Once the dough is frozen place the dough balls in a freezer bag. Freeze for 3 to 4 months.
To bake them place the frozen dough on the cookie sheet, no need to thaw them, and add about 2 minutes to the original baking time. The amount of time you need to add will depend upon the size of your dough ball.
When you’re ready to bake them, just bake them directly from the freezer – no defrosting necessary. Add a couple of minutes to your baking time.

Nutrition
You don’t have to make drop cookies. You can easily turn any cookie recipe into a bar cookie. Simply press the dough into a greased 9×9 or a 9×13 pan, depending on how thick you want your bars, and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes or until the edges are golden and when a toothpick is inserted into the center of the pan it comes out clean.
