What are Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes?

This delicious dip is made with Little Debbie Christmas Tree snack cakes. Each year, around the holidays, these delightfully sweet snack cakes start appearing in local stores. The inside of the cake is made with layers of spongy yellow cake and a creamy vanilla frosting. The cake is coated with a vanilla icing. Each one is topped with red garland stripes and are sprinkled with coarse green sugar crystals.

The sweet vanilla flavor of these snack cakes is what gives this dip its flavor.

Ingredients for Christmas Tree Dip Recipe:

  • Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes – you’ll want to grab a few boxes of these cakes. Some to use in the dip, one to decorate the top of the dip and the others for snacking on.
  • Cream cheese – use your favorite type of cream cheese (fat free, lite, regular). You’ll want the cream cheese to be at room temperature when you make this dip.
  • Whipped Topping – use your favorite whipped topping. You can use lite, regular or even sugar-free varieties. I used Cool Whip in this recipe.
  • Milk – this is used to make the dip mixture smooth and creamy. Swap it out for your favorite type of non dairy milk such as almond milk, soy milk or coconut milk.
  • Vanilla Extract – adding some vanilla extract helps to bring out the vanilla flavor in the snack cakes.
  • Holiday sprinkles – I used non pareil sprinkles in holiday colors (red, green and white). Use your favorite type of holiday colored sprinkles.
  • Dippers – you’ll want to serve different kinds of dippers with this Little Debbie Christmas tree dip. Try using different types of cookies such as vanilla wafers, shortbread cookies, graham crackers and any other of your favorite dippers. See the FAQ section below for more information.

Christmas Tree Dip Recipe Tips:

To make a smooth dip coarsely chop up the Christmas tree snack cakes. This makes it easier to blend the snack cakes into the cream cheese.

Keep the cream cheese at room temperature. This makes it easier to make it nice and smooth.

Thaw the whipped topping. You don’t want it to be cold and icy when you mix it into the cream cheese.

If you make this dip to serve a day or two later then do not add the sprinkles to the top of the dip. The food coloring on the sprinkles will bleed into the dip making it look messy because the color will streak. This doesn’t affect the flavor of the dip but it just isn’t as pretty looking.

How to store this Christmas Tree Dip:

If you are making this festive dip ahead of time for your holiday parties then follow the recipe up to the step where you blend in the whipped topping. Place the dip into an airtight covered container. Store in the refrigerator for about 5 days. On the day you are serving the dip bring it to room temperature, place in a serving bowl, top with sprinkles and serve.

To store leftover dip, place it in an airtight container or cover in plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

Yes you can use a food processor to quickly combine the ingredients for this dip. Place the cream cheese, milk and vanilla extract into the food processor and run until smooth. Add the snack cakes and process until smooth. Add in the whipped topping and pulse until just combined. You don’t want to over process the dip.

What type of sprinkles work best for Christmas dessert dip?

You’ll want to use small sized sprinkles with this dip. You don’t want large crunchy sprinkles (the shaped pieces of sugar type). Go with non pareils, soft sprinkles or even sanding sugar. Stick with colors that match the season or the reason for your gathering. You can match colors for baby showers, birthday parties and even holidays such as red and green sprinkles for Christmas.
