You’ll love making these easy Chicken Taquitos in the air fryer. A mixture of shredded chicken, cream cheese, shredded cheese and seasonings are rolled up in corn tortillas or flour tortillas and then cooked until crispy in the air fryer.
Air fryers cook using hot air instead of oil to give them a delicious, crispy texture without all the calories found in taquitos cooked in a deep fryer.
Easy Chicken Taquitos In The Air Fryer
These homemade cheesy chicken taquitos are so easy to make. Eat them as a made dish or serve them up as an appetizer at family gatherings or your next big game night party.
Here’s what you’ll need to make them.
Ingredients to make this Air Fryer Chicken Taquitos Recipe
- Corn Tortillas – you’ll want to use full sized corn tortillas if you are looking to make big enough for a quick meal. You can also use mini sized tortillas for snack sized taquitos. Don’t want to use corn tortillas? You can easily swap them out for flour tortillas.
- Shredded Chicken – you’ll need some cooked, shredded chicken to make this recipe. You can use leftover chicken or even rotisserie chicken in this recipe.
My favorite thing to do is to make a big batch of this Crockpot Shredded Chicken to use in this recipe as well as to freeze leftovers for other meals.
- Shredded Cheese – use your favorite shredded cheese such as cheddar cheese or a Mexican cheese blend.
- Cream Cheese – use your favorite cream cheese to make these taquitos. It should be at room temperature to make it easier to mix the other ingredients in.
- Seasonings – you make your own seasoning blend by using chili powder, garlic powder and oregano. You can also use a store bought taco seasoning mix or try making your own homemade taco seasoning.
How to make Air Fryer Chicken Taquitos
Step 1: In a bowl, mix together the shredded chicken, softened cream cheese, shredded cheese and seasonings.
If using corn tortillas you will want to warm them before rolling the taquitos to keep the tortilla from cracking. Stack 4 to 5 tortillas together and wrap them in a damp paper towel. Microwave the wrapped tortillas for 15 to 20 seconds to warm them.
You can use flour tortillas in place of the corn tortillas. They are a bit easier to roll up and don’t have the same issues with cracking.
Step 2: Fill the warm tortilla with 2 tablespoons of chicken filling. Roll the tortilla up tightly. You can secure them with a toothpick to keep them from unrolling.
Step 3: Place the rolled taquitos seam side down in the air fryer basket, unless you have secured them with a toothpick, in a single layer.
If you want your taquitos extra crispy and brown you can spray the tops with cooking spray or lightly brush them with olive oil. This isn’t needed but it does make them nice and golden brown
Step 4: Cook at 375 degrees F for 5 to 7 minutes or until the taquitos are lightly brown, the edges are crispy and the cheese has melted.
Serve your chicken taquitos with your favorite toppings, dips and side dishes.
Air frying tip: Every air fryer brand will cook a little different and you might need to cook your taquitos a few minutes longer. Check your taquitos at the 5 minute mark, and if not browned, then continue to cook for another 2 minutes. If they still aren’t browned continue to cook 2 minutes at a time until crispy and brown.
Taquitos variations: swap out the shredded chicken for ground beef to make delicious air fryer beef taquitos.
What to serve with Chicken Taquitos
If you are serving these taquitos as appetizers you may want to serve them up with your favorite dipping sauces. Try these:
Queso Dip
Salsa – store bought or homemade salsa
Sour Cream
Serving these taquitos as a main meal? Try topping your taquitos with shredded lettuce, sour cream, guacamole or Pico De Gallo.
Try a squeeze of lime juice over your taquitos.
Try some of these side dishes to round out the meal:
Your favorite rice – cilantro rice is one of my favorites to include on the side
Mexican street corn
How to store leftover Chicken Taquitos
If you have leftovers you can store them in the refrigerator in a storage bag or an airtight container for up to 5 days.
How to Reheat Taquitos
Taquitos can get a big soggy when stored in the refrigerator. While you can easily microwave them 30 to 45 seconds and they will still taste good. If you want them crispy then you will need to reheat them in the air fryer.
Place your leftover taquitos in a single layer in the air fryer and reheat at 375 degrees F for 2 to 4 minutes.
Can you freeze Chicken Taquitos?
Yes these freeze great! Once you fill and roll the taquitos all them to cool a bit. Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze for 1-2 hours. Once they are frozen you can place them in a freezer bag. Squeeze all the air out of the bag and seal it.
I like to double bag my freezer items to prevent any type of freezer burn. Plus this allows me to include a piece of paper in the bag that includes the name of the recipe and the date that it was made. Always remember to mark what’s in the bag when you freeze food so you never wonder what’s in the mystery bag.
Can you cook frozen taquitos in the air fryer?
Yes you can! You’ll need to cook the taquitos for a bit longer when they are frozen. Place the frozen taquitos directly in the air fryer basket. Cook at 375 degrees F for 10-12 minutes. You can turn the taquitos half way through cooking if desired.
